Number of the unemployed in the

Unemployment is a serious problem for the
municipality. In 1991, the
number of the unemployed was 688 people, and in 1999, - 2905 people.
The number of the employed in the larger industrial enterprises - "Assarel-Medet"
Inc., "Opticoelectron" Inc.,
"Oborishte" ltd., " Riton " Inc decreased. The unemployment rate
is higher than the average for the
country.
There were not any substantial changes in
the number of the unemployed in the first months of 2000. Their
number according to months is as follows: by 01.02. - 3 430 people, by
01.03. - 3 473 people, by 01.04. - 3 554 people 1 164 of these
persons are with workers' professions (32.8%), and the specialists
are 859 people (24.2%). About 75% of the unemployed are engineering
and technical cadres. As a whole, 2 023 people out of 3 554,
or 57%, have a specialty and profession. The remaining unemployed (1531
people, or 43.1%) are without a profession or qualification. Most of
them (87%) are with primary or lower education, which makes it
difficult for them to find a job.
The unemployed women are 1 708
(48%). Their educational and professional structure is almost the
same as that of the men.
As for the age structure of the persons under review, 1 198
(33.7%) of them are up to 29 years old.).
The ratio between the unemployed with a right to a redundancy
benefit and those without it is 21.8:78.2.

The educational structure of the unemployed persons is as
follows: with higher education
- 128 people (3.6%), with a specialized or vocational
secondary education - 1 609 people (45.3%), with a general
secondary education - 216 people (6.1%), and with primary or
lower education - 632 people (45%). The educational
structure of the younger part of the unemployed is more
favourable.
Out of all the 3 554 people, the registered for the first
time are 1 452 (40.8%), for the second time - 927 (26.1%),
and for more than 2 times - 1 175 people (33.1%).

The distribution of the unemployed according to branches
is as follows: farming and forestry - 351 people (9.9%),
extractive industry - 184 people (5.2%), processing industry
- 1208 people (34.0%), construction - 112 people (3.2%),
commerce - 215 people (6%), and other branches and
activities - 1480 people (41.7%).
The registered unemployed coming from the private sector
are 789 people (22.2%).
