Sights of the Municipality

Some more important objects of the municipality's cultural and historical heritage are:

 

The Krassen Fortress - situated 5 km southwards of Panagyurishte - is a military, administrative, economic and spiritual centre of the Panagyurishte region in late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (c. 4-14 AD) 

A precious find was discovered in the fortress during archaeological research in 1987 - a medallion-stamp of the fortress' last ruler Rafail. The stamp is the only known object which belonged to a Bulgarian noble of that time.

Toutevata Kashta. The house in which the April Uprising was declared on 20 April 1876.

The house is situated in the front part of a small yard, fenced from the street with a stone wall. It was built in three stages:

  • a wooden dwelling - burnt down;
  • a restored and enlarged ground floor;
  • a superstructure floor above part of the ground floor - 1875.

It underwent a capital restoration in 1988 -1991 The exhibition was open on 1 May 1993 and was dedicated to 20 April 1876 - the day on which the April Uprising was declared.

Doudekovata Kashta.  T he house in which Petar Shtarbanov -a member of the Temporary revolutionary Government - killed himself in an uneven battle with the enemy's soldiers to prevent them for catching him alive.

The house was built in 1853-1856 by the symmetrical design of the Plovdiv houses. The facade with a trapezium fronton above the colonnaded entrance gives the house an impressive look.

It was restored in the period 1990-1996. The exhibition shows the household of a wealthy Panagyurishte merchant on the eve of the April Uprising. There is a memorial corner dedicated to the Panagyurishte inhabitants killed in the house on 30 April 1876 in the basement.

The church "Sveto Vavedenie Bogorodichno" was built in 1818 by master builders from Bansko, and the wood-carvers were from the Debar region (now in the Republic of Macedonia). It was burnt down during the April Uprising and was restored in 1878-1880 by master builders from Bratsigovo and wood-carvers from the town of Strouga (now in the Republic of Macedonia). Part of the icons in the iconostasis were painted by Ivan Dospevski. The composition The Last Supper is a work of the Panagyurishte icon-painter Ivancho Zografina. The frescoes are by Nikola Obrazopisov. The church was restored in 1975-1976.

  The church "Sveti Georgi" (St. George) was built in 1856 ã. t was burnt down during the April Uprising and was restored in 1878-1880. The new iconostasis was made by masters from the town of Strouga. the church is considered as the town's cathedral temple and used to be one of the largest and most impressive temples in Bulgaria.

The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the April Uprising 1976 was the culmination of the people's gratitude. The National Memorial Complex "Apriltsi", a work of the eminent Bulgarian architects Ivan Nikolov and Bogdan Tomalevski and the renowned sculptors Sekoul Kroumov, Velichko Minekov and Dimitar Daskalov, was erected on the historic hill Manyovo Bardo near the town.
